The Evolving Work Landscape: the Gig Economy
Looking for a job with more flexibility? Trying to strike a better balance between work and life? Or maybe you’re looking to make some extra bucks on the side with a side gig.
You’re not alone.
According to a recent study published by Stats Canada, there are 1.5 million Canadians reported that they were part of the “gig economy.” Following the pandemic 28% of adult Canadians participate to some extent in gig work. This is up significantly from 17% in 2019 (Read the article here). As we settle into our new normal, it’s clear that the gig economy provides multiple opportunities to add revenue into our pockets.
What kinds of gigs are there?
Nowadays, having a gig doesn’t limit you to be an aspiring ‘freelance’ journalist globetrotter or delivering UberEats. Some sources are suggesting that gig work is becoming increasingly “white collar,” — and even becoming the primary worktype for many. Think more traditional “office” type work: computer programming, marketing, graphic design, technical writing or editing documents, as a few examples. Other popular types of work include personal assistant services, maintenance or handiwork, and babysitting or house-sitting.
Bottom line? The gig economy is growing and work trends are evolving. And the best part is that we have more options to choose from to design the life we want.
