Jocelyn Ross: Redefining Design from Architecture to Interiors
A Journey Rooted in Passion
Jocelyn Ross's fascination with design began long before her formal education. As a teenager, she was already immersed in her father’s architectural firm, an experience that ignited a lifelong passion for design. "Being around architecture from such a young age gave me a unique perspective and an early appreciation for design," Jocelyn recalls.
After earning her master’s in architecture from Arizona State University in 1997, Jocelyn spent nearly two decades honing her skills with various architectural firms across Arizona and Mexico. Her experience provided her with a deep understanding of architectural principles and an eye for detail. However, over time, Jocelyn found herself increasingly captivated by the nuances of interior design—how spaces could be transformed not just structurally but also aesthetically and emotionally.
In 2016, Jocelyn took a significant step by opening her own firm. Initially focused on architecture, she eventually realized her true passion lay in interior design. “At the time I graduated, I couldn’t have predicted this exact path, but in hindsight, everything led me here organically” She explains, noting her shift from architecture to design. "The combination of architectural expertise and a passion for interior design allowed me to approach projects with a unique perspective."
Evolution and Transformation: A New Focus
Since its inception, Jocelyn’s business has experienced a remarkable transformation. Initially, her firm was centered around architecture, with a focus that lacked clear direction for growth. The onset of Covid-19 marked a pivotal moment. "The slowdown during the pandemic provided a chance to reassess my true passion as people began focusing on their home environments," Jocelyn notes.
With the world at a standstill Jocelyn was able to shift her focus and by 2021, she had fully embraced interior design. This change allowed her to explore the finer details and creative freedom of interior design, leading to a more comprehensive and innovative service for her clients. "This shift aligned my business with my personal interests and allowed it to thrive," she says.
In addition to client meetings and project management, Jocelyn dedicates time to sourcing materials, meeting vendors, and working on design proposals. She also prioritizes creative work, such as sketching and developing new concepts. "Staying inspired by current trends and continuing education is crucial," she adds. Jocelyn is currently taking an AI for Interior Designers course, reflecting her commitment to staying at the cutting edge of her field.
Celebrating Successes and Overcoming Obstacles
Jocelyn’s journey is marked by several notable successes. One significant achievement was the seamless transition from architecture to interior design. "It was a challenging pivot, but it allowed me to align my business with my true passion," she says. Additionally, her firm has gained recognition in the design industry, including prestigious projects like the remodel of a boutique hotel in Palm Springs and a historic home modernization. Being a finalist for Western Living’s Designers of the Year is another major milestone.
However, the path is not without obstacles. Jocelyn faced challenges managing the business aspects of her firm, such as finances, marketing, and client relations, while maintaining her creative vision. The fluctuating market and economic conditions also required adaptability and resilience.
Keys to Growth and Success
Reflecting on her firm’s growth, Jocelyn identifies several key factors. The decision to focus on interior design, aligned with her personal and professional goals, was crucial. Building strong relationships with clients, vendors, and colleagues has also been instrumental in fostering growth. "Word-of-mouth referrals, repeat business, and collaborations have been vital," she notes.
Support from her family, friends, and clients has been a cornerstone of her success. "Their guidance and encouragement have been invaluable," Jocelyn says. Their insistence on documenting projects professionally and creating a robust online presence has helped establish her business. This support network has provided confidence and practical advice, making it a fundamental part of her entrepreneurial journey.
Partnering with Guildstreet
Jocelyn’s decision to partner with Guildstreet was a strategic move to focus more on her creative work. "I realized that my strengths and passions lie in design, not in day-to-day management," she explains. Guildstreet’s expertise in handling the financial aspects of the business has allowed Jocelyn to streamline operations and concentrate on delivering exceptional results for her clients. This collaboration has enhanced her business’s efficiency and allowed her to devote more time to her passion.
Jocelyn’s story serves as a reminder of how passion, adaptability, and support can drive both entrepreneurial success and professional fulfillment. Her journey from architecture to interior design exemplifies the importance of following one's true passions and leveraging the strengths we cultivate through time and exploration to create a thriving business. As she forges ahead, continually innovating and inspiring in the design world, Jocelyn Ross stands as a shining example of entrepreneurial excellence and creative vision.
